the young agrarians

three young people farming on other people’s land

what’s a young agrarian?

agrarian as in ‘relating to Land, especially the use of Land for farming and agriculture.’

young, as in young, wild and free; coupla young thangs in our 20s. But not as in neil young (too old); yung thug (too thug); or residents of Young, NSW (too far - we’re in Eganstown, near Daylesford!).

We’re learning how to use traditional regenerative and sustainable farming practices that are relevant to the present-day. For us, a young agrarian is an agroecologist – that is, someone who farms and produces food ethically, whose practices are ecologically-sound, and asserts our right to democratically choose our food systems.

We live on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, and acknowledge the care and custodianship of Djaara. We pay our deepest respects and thanks for how life here was and continues to be sustained through Dja Dja Wurrung Law. Sovereignty over Country has never been ceded. We support Indigenous peoples’ self-determining and shaping the way the impacts of colonialism can be redressed. We express solidarity with the treaty and truth-telling processes which are underway, and support Indigenous peoples’ right to self-determine relationships with government bodies, including forming government bodies. We acknowledge the importance of Indigenous knowledges to agroecological farming practices, and express our allyship in building sustainable ecosystems, as well as harmonious, caring and supportive farming communities.
